Nine claims, recovered from the recording

Cosmology, Pop says, is why humans collectively try to understand the real universe. His picture of it is four-dimensional and specific — and the crucial word in it is not time, it's moment. Claim by claim, anchored to his own words so it stays verifiable (and correctable — this is round two, already corrected once):

  1. i.Reality is a 4D graph of moments; time runs one way along it. In this diagram time is the left–right axis. The winds of history blow left; rightward, the fans of possibility open.
  2. ii.The sheet is space — one whole spatial snapshot, hung vertically across time. Not a floor the world stands on: a plane the world passes through, pivoted upright across the tunnel of moments, moving through them. “It's literally a sheet… a moving sheet, that now, in this mass, time, space, energy — and we're all dancing on it, in a planar manner, in slices of time.”
  3. iii.The sheet is the now-slice as an idea — not a container. The void isn't nothing and the sheet isn't everything: space and matter move through the sheet, and the sheet through them. Where a thing crosses the plane, it is lit — that lighting-up is what now means.
  4. iv.The moment is the critical property: on the slice, everything happens at the same time. Not all-time-at-once — one moment, everywhere at once. Grandpa talking, grandson saying hey Pop, the same now. “Everything has to be synchronous. Everything just happens at the same time. Grandpa's talking, grandson's saying ‘hey Pop’ at the same time.” — Rowan said hey Pop.
  5. v.The sheet necessarily has thickness — along the time axis. “Now” is a window of same-time, not a zero-width line. How wide is unknown, and the estimates span from about one nanosomething (Pop leans here: “really, really thin”), through the echo of a smartphone's photo-lag, up to a cultural now running “from the Trojan Wars and Odysseus to the next 2,000 years.” “This moving sheet of time has necessarily got a certain thickness to it… No one knows.”
  6. vi.The thickness is where the beat comes from — it rises from the microscopic. The macro-world's activity is fed from the fine grain inside the slab. “That's where all the beat comes from, from the microscopic.” (heard through wind — see the salvage list)
  7. vii.Every past moment was once pressed up against the sheet — and each is its own slice, its own now. Troy isn't a memory smeared into the present; it's a complete slice standing back down the tunnel, a now that was — recovered, captured, modelled. The ice going back (“the main geologic marker”), the migrations (“we all come from somewhere”), the Big Bang: settled slices, oldest furthest left. (Settled — Pop's no mystic about the Big Bang. The open question in this cosmology faces the other way.)
  8. viii. All creation passes through equally. No privileged observer; consciousness is not the ticket. Every worldline meets the sheet the same way. “Us being all creation — every electron, every ibis, every Subaru Forester.”
  9. ix.The future is a fan — and drive picks a thread. Right of the sheet there are no slices yet: each worldline opens into a spread of maybes, widening with distance (call that thermodynamics and probability — Sam's gloss, flagged as such). But the fan isn't neutral: one thread in it is visible from the sheet, and picking it is the one force in this model that runs against the wind. “See the good future and go for it.”
how it needs to behave

Behavioural rules the diagram enforces

  • AXISTime is the horizontal axis. Past to the left; the future has no slices yet.
  • FANRight of the sheet, every worldline dissolves into a fan of ghost-threads that widens with distance — probability doing its spreading. In each fan one gold thread lifts and carries a glint at its far end: the good future. Pop's dictum floats where the fans thin out.
  • SLICEThe sheet hangs vertically at now: a cloth pinned along its top edge, hem swaying in the winds of history (which blow leftward, always).
  • IDEAWorldlines — every electron, every ibis, every Subaru Forester — are woven threads running up the tunnel. They brighten as they approach the sheet and are LIT where they cross it. The sheet contains nothing; it illuminates what passes through (claim iii).
  • MOMENTPress “hey Pop” and everything currently crossing the slice flashes in the same frame — one moment, everywhere at once. No propagation is drawn. That's claim iv, rendered literally.
  • THICKThe thickness slider extrudes the sheet along the time axis — the window of same-time. It runs one Planck → one nano → a video frame → the photo-lag echo → a breath → a lifetime → Troy→now, ending at “no one knows.” Sparks rise inside it: the beat from the microscopic (claim vi). And the slider is literally “what timescale are you working on”: thin, the now is the hey-Pop moment flowing along the sheet; mid, it's ibis-and-Subaru scale; push it to Troy → now and the Troy slice itself is absorbed — lit warm, marked “inside this now.” At no one knows the window breathes, and Troy flickers in and out of the present.
  • SCRUBThe scrub control travels back down the tunnel and lights up the old nows one by one — Troy, the ice, the migrations, the Big Bang — each a complete slice that was once the moving sheet itself (claim vii). Scrub home to return to now.

The standing slices

slicebehind nowPop's note
“hey Pop”0 — the sheet itselfRowan said hey Pop. The canonical moment: everything on the slice, at the same time.
Troy & Odysseus~3,200 yrThe far edge of the cultural now — “from the Trojan Wars… to the next 2,000 years.” A recovered, captured, modelled slice.
The ice went back~11,700 yr“The main geologic marker for us.” The ice retreated; we started settling down — cave to hut, hearth to town.
Out of Africa~70,000 yr“We all come from somewhere — from Africa, recently now, to the east, north and south.”
Big Bang~13.8 GyrThe far wall of the tunnel. Settled — Pop's no mystic.
the good futureright of the sheetNot a slice yet — a fan of maybes, one gold thread lifted in each. “See the good future and go for it.”
We all come from somewhere —
from Africa, recently now, to the east, north and south…
time went by, time went by, started settling down —
cave to hut, hearth to home, spit to town.
“We All Come From Somewhere” — as sung into the wind; full words to follow from Pop, John & Tony writing it up. Soundtrack slot reserved.

Fragments flagged, not fabricated

The watch caught wind as well as cosmology, and round one of this page briefly contained ideas that were Sam's, not Pop's (a transmission ripple; a mystic Big Bang) — struck on correction. The remaining uncertain readings, marked so the outline stays honest:

  • “the Moon Chute now”almost certainly the moving sheet of now, wind-mangled. (Though “moon chute” is a gorgeous accident and deserves a b-side.)
  • “all the bait comes from the microscopic”read as beat — the slab's fine grain feeding the macro rhythm. If Pop meant bait, the claim gets stranger and better.
  • “this one's potato run by none”unrecovered. Filed verbatim. “We just hear the saves and try and make sense” — which is, frankly, also the epistemology of this whole project.
  • “this will be the circuit, baby”kept as the project's closing benediction.
  • “10 to the minus 26, if I recall”the Planck time is ~5.4×10⁻⁴⁴ s; 10⁻²⁶ sits in the unnamed gulf between nano and Planck. The thickness slider spans the whole gulf, so both memories are covered.
  • “thermodynamics / probability + human drive”Sam's editorial gloss on why the future fans out and how a thread gets picked — flagged as his, not Pop's. Pop's own words on the matter are only the dictum: “see the good future and go for it.”

Core data structures

The minimal shapes a real movingsheetofnow.com engine needs, revised to Pop's corrections. The deliberate oddities: Sheet is an empty struct — it's an idea, not a thing; the tunnel holds the content. And the future isn't a type at all.
